Data Center Grid Interconnections: Lessons Learned from IBRs
Rapid data center growth poses significant challenges to bulk power system (BPS) reliability. Recent incidents, such as the tripping of 1.5 GW of data center load in Northern Virginia, highlight the need to reassess interconnection processes and requirements. A recent study analyzed the risks and challenges data center growth poses across several dimensions on both the distribution and transmission level, mirroring lessons learned from inverter-based resource integration. Proposed mitigations include updated regulations, streamlined interconnection processes and enhanced modeling. This session will share insights from the study, which drive home the importance of collaboration, communication and detailed technical information sharing among all stakeholders.
