Grid modernization , Advanced distribution operations

As the energy landscape evolves with increasing adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), electric vehicles (EVs), and demands for higher efficiency, utilities are faced with the challenge of maintaining grid reliability while optimizing voltage. This panel session brings together leading voices in the field to discuss state-of-the-art advancements and practical insights into Voltage Optimization (VO), Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR), and grid edge voltage control.    We’ll hear from three panelists representing Reinhausen, ComEd and Excel. Reinhausen will introduce the potential of grid edge voltage control. Exploring its role in power quality improvement and grid performance, the session will highlight successful implementations by utilities such as PG&E, ComEd, and National Grid, emphasizing its benefits in reducing energy losses, enhancing DER integration, and supporting EV infrastructure. Key challenges like regulatory hurdles and technical interoperability will also be addressed, alongside future trends in this emerging domain.   Further, our panelist from ComEd will provide a comprehensive look at the deployment of VO/CVR, from leveraging data analytics to overcoming technical challenges. Attendees will gain valuable lessons from ComEd’s real-world experiences, including their use of the DCIAB application. This segment will also discuss the broader economic, regulatory, and environmental implications of VO/CVR and its interplay with DERs, energy storage, and electrification initiatives.    Lastly, Xcel Energy will delve into the enabling technologies that facilitate VO/CVR through advanced grid controls. Highlighting the role of sensors, communication infrastructure, and control algorithms, this session will underscore the importance of real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making. Xcel’s perspective on emerging technologies, scalability, and cybersecurity considerations offers a forward-looking view of voltage optimization in modern grids.   By integrating strategic insights from these industry leaders, this panel will provide a holistic understanding of the evolving grid landscape, offering practical pathways to enhance grid performance, foster innovation, and meet the challenges of a dynamic energy ecosystem.
