Sustainability

The DTECH® team strives to create an experience that is cleaner and more sustainable from start to finish. Our mission is to impact change through our conference programming as well as our event planning processes and onsite practices wherever possible. Our team and our vendors are committed to mitigating environmental impacts and supporting social change whenever and wherever we hold DTECH® today and in the future. Check out a few of our efforts within the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis below.

Carbon reduction

  • Premium efficiency motor replacement: A NEMA Premium Efficiency Motor program replaces any hotel equipment over 5 horsepower for improved energy performance.
  • Sustainable cooling systems: Freezer and cooler units use plastic air flow curtains to reduce temperature loss and minimize energy output.
  • Reflective roofing materials: The hotel’s white-coated membrane roof reflects heat, reducing cooling energy demands.

Energy efficiency

  • Smart energy controls: Occupancy sensors, motion-activated lighting, and digital thermostats regulate energy use in meeting rooms, guest rooms, and public spaces.
  • LED & high-efficiency lighting: Ongoing upgrades replace traditional lighting with energy-saving LED bulbs.
  • Efficient motors & HVAC systems: High-efficiency motors, variable frequency drives, and an energy management system optimize temperature control in guest rooms and meeting spaces.

Water conservation Initiatives

  • Low-flow fixtures: Guest rooms feature low-flow toilets, faucets, and showerheads to minimize water waste.
  • Fill cycle diverters: Installed in all toilets, these reduce water use by 50% per flush.
  • Linen reuse program: Linens, sheets, and towels are replaced every third day unless requested otherwise, significantly cutting water and energy consumption.
  • Recycling receptacles: Available in guest rooms, colleague spaces, and public areas to promote responsible waste management.

Food waste diversion

  • Partnering with Feeding America to donate surplus banquet food to those in need.
  • Sending food waste to Second Harvest Farms, supporting sustainable animal feed.
  • Minimizing waste through careful ordering, creative menu planning, and bulk food service.

Recycling & reuse initiatives

  • Implementing recycled plastic guest room key cards instead of traditional magnetic cards.
  • Donating old towels and linens to local charities for reuse.
  • Collecting and repurposing unused toiletries through Clean the World, providing hygiene products to communities in need.

Locally sourced ingredients

  • Partnerships with over 20 local farmers, bakers, and suppliers to provide fresh, seasonal products.
  • Roof-top bee hive produces honey featured in the Prairie Kitchen Restaurant.
  • Locally sourced seafood, including Minnesota’s Driftless Trout and Walleye.

Plastic & packaging reduction

  • Eliminating plastic straws in favor of compostable alternatives.
  • Using large water carafes instead of individual plastic bottles.
  • Utilizing eco-friendly takeout containers made from wheat grass and recycled plastic bottles.
