Approaches to Wildfire Risk in the Northeast: Situational Awareness and Emergency Management
Wildfire risk is no longer a West Coast problem. Changing climate patterns, extended drought periods, and aging infrastructure have elevated wildfire threat across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic — yet most eastern utilities lack the dedicated tools, models, and operational processes to respond. Building a wildfire program from scratch can seem daunting: it typically demands significant capital investment, deep technical expertise, and years of development.
This session will focus on a case study of how Avangrid adapted wildfire risk analyses and approaches from western utilities to fit their needs. The session will highlight the modeling approaches used to determine protection settings, lessons learned from a pilot with Firescape's situational awareness tool and how it changed their operational protocols.
