Standardizing Power Quality Modeling for DER Grid Compatibility at Scale
As distributed energy resources (DERs) continue to expand, utilities across the Northeastern United States are encountering new challenges related to power quality, voltage compatibility, and the reliable operation of customer equipment. This session will explore practical approaches for identifying, analyzing, and resolving issues such as flickering lights and voltage instability associated with increasing DER penetration. Drawing on real-world utility experience, presenters will highlight the application of power quality monitoring, electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis, equipment susceptibility testing, and smart inverter evaluation to diagnose grid compatibility issues and implement effective mitigation strategies. Attendees will gain insights into how the integration of field experience, advanced modeling, and collaborative research is enabling utilities to enhance grid reliability, maintain power quality, and successfully manage the transition to a more distributed and inverter-dominated electric grid.
