As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, utilities are under increasing pressure to improve the resilience of their distribution systems. In 2014, Ameren Missouri implemented a targeted storm hardening strategy on a critical distribution line segment by strategically placing composite poles along the line. These poles, with their high rotational deflection and durability, effectively absorb the impact of severe storms while preventing cascading failures that typically cause widespread outages.

This presentation highlights the tangible benefits of this approach, which strikes a balance between cost and reliability. Rather than reinforcing the entire line with heavier loading requirements, Ameren Missouri’s policy of deploying composite poles at strategic intervals reduced overall system strengthening costs, minimized design time, and improved post-storm recovery performance.

A real-world case study—the Babler project—demonstrated this strategy’s success. In 2025, a tornado impacted the 34.5kV line causing the wooden poles in its path to fail. Per design, the storm hardened composite poles remained standing, enabling faster service restoration and preventing outages for thousands of customers. Exact figures on the number of customer outages prevented will be detailed in the full case study presentation. This success story underscores how a focused, policy-driven storm hardening plan can protect critical infrastructure while saving utilities time and money.

Attendees will gain insights into Ameren Missouri’s storm hardening guidelines, practical pole placement strategies, and key takeaways that can be readily applied to their own systems, enabling more reliable service delivery in the face of escalating extreme weather events.
