ComEd's High Temperature Superconductor Tour
To attend this event, you must add this to your registration. The cost is $75, covering transportation to and from the facility. This can be added to your registration when registering or after by visiting the registration resource center.
Step into the future of grid innovation at ComEd’s TSS114 Northwest Substation, home to the only in-service, active superconductor in the United States. This facility showcases ComEd’s pioneering collaboration with American Superconductor (AMSC) to pilot a High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) system designed to enhance grid reliability and resiliency.
Technology Spotlight: High Temperature Superconductivity
Superconducting Bus Tie: Operating at 12kV and 3000 amps, the HTS system functions as a bus tie between two terminals, enabling an N-2 contingency configuration that significantly boosts system redundancy. Liquid Nitrogen Cooling: The system uses liquid nitrogen to maintain superconductivity, allowing for high-capacity power transfer with minimal energy loss. Strategic Location: The Northwest Substation was selected for its similarity to the Chicago Business District environment, making it an ideal testbed for urban grid applications.
